Post pandemic, there was rightly a sharp focus on mental health. Charities were keen to ensure their teams had the support they needed to adjust to what we’d all been through, and to navigate the changing times ahead.

Skip forward a couple of years and it’s time to revisit our approach to mental health support in our sector.

With other challenges now in place, such as the recruitment of staff and volunteers, falling rag prices and rising costs, the focus on wellbeing seems to have dropped back, and instead operational issues are at the fore.

But a strong, healthy and valued workforce will always be vital in delivering our operational and strategic goals.

Without the support needed to manage the pressures of working in a modern charity retail environment, sickness absence and turnover will increase, whilst productivity decreases.

Research from Deloitte puts the cost of poor mental health to UK employers at £56 billion a year, yet for every £1 spent on wellbeing support there was an average £5 return.

And as a sector dedicated to making the world a better place through the vital work carried out by retailers’ parent charities, we should be taking a lead in ensuring the wellbeing of our staff, volunteers and supporters.  That’s why we offer the Mental Health First Aid England qualification via Charity Retail Learning.

With Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England training you will be accessing the very best evidence-based Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course available.

Their training is grounded in research, developed with clinical practitioners and proven to increase MHFAiders’ confidence in supporting people with mental health issues.

Charity Retail Learning is also now providing the updated course offer, which means MHFA training doesn’t stop when the course comes to an end. MHFAiders receive continuous support well beyond their initial certification so they are confident, empowered and motivated to carry out their role.

We also have an additional half day webinar that covers how to apply your qualification in a charity retail environment. This covers topics such as boundaries between staff and volunteers, working in a public space, supporting customers with mental health issues and much more.

Our course in September is fantastic value at just £275 plus VAT per person for 4 x half day sessions. This is £50 less than the standard cost.  Additionally, the charity retail webinar is just £90 plus VAT – or free to those who are Charity Retail Learning subscribers.  Out tutor Kate also provides ongoing support via MHFA and her own Action Learning Sets.

If you’re interested in booking a place, you can do it here – or if you’d like to know more, or discuss a bespoke course for multiple members of your team, please get in touch at hello@thecharityretailacademy.co.uk  . We’re always happy to hear from you.

“The course was hosted by the lovely Kate who explained everything very well, even it was difficult for me at the beginning. It helped me more understand mental health problems and I would be able to notice and help those in need, including customers, friends and family”.
